Great expectations on Valentine’s Day

hearts-val-dayI think of myself as a romantic, yet Valentine’s Day just does not do it for me. While I won’t say no to the flowers or chocolates I may be lucky enough to get, I find the expectations numbing.

And that’s just the point, as soon as there are expectations there is bound to be disappointment. It reminds me of New Year’s Eve. There’s so much pressure to go out and have a blast come 31 December, it just never seems possible to deliver on the expectation. These days I prefer to be in bed by 10pm and greet the new year in the morning.

But for the rest of you Valentine’s Day is a rich red fantasy of what love is all about. It’s a chance to show your loved one, or early dating person your true love, if the former, or your clear intention if the latter.

If it’s a love of many years, you can’t do better than words. Choose a card that expresses your feelings as well as you would, but then add your own words to make it personal.

For new relationships, you can’t go wrong with chocolates and red roses are guaranteed to soften any lady’s heart.

If your relationship is still a long way from intimacy, a coffee mug is a good gift choice. Some come with words which may express a thought that you want to convey to your partner or just an image that tells a story. Do not give a plain mug that just blends in with standard kitchen crockery.

If you want to splash out on your lady and you have an intimate relationship, sexy underwear or perfume can make the ideal gift.

To summarise, my top choice of Valentine’s gifts are special cards, flowers, chocolates, coffee mugs, underwear and perfume.

Whatever you choose try to drop the expectation and just enjoy the day. This goes for the giver and the receiver of the gift – be happy with what you
